By paths of Jews of Lisbon

The Jewish communities in ancient Lisbon were important parto f the city’s life. The Jews were advisers of kings and queens, of doctors and researchers, of geographers and mathematicians, which transformed Portugal in the richest country in the world in the XVI century. The tour will begin with a general introduction about the Jewish presence in the city, and will continue by foot to the city center. You will pass by the place of the tragic death of about 4 thousand Jews on the eve of Easter in 1506, near the church of San Domingos; will rise to the Castle of St. George, with the best panoramic view on the city. Do not miss the opportunity to get lost in Alfama, also known as the Jewish Quarter. Then go to the unique synagogue in Lisbon Shaare Tikvá, bypassing the area where 15,000 of Jews were forced to accept Catholicism.
Moving on to Belém to visit the Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline style and the tribute to the king, who welcomed and protected the Jews fleeing from Spain. There will be time to stop at the monument to Discoveries, where you will see Jewish faces of discoverers of Portuguese Golden Century.
